How to Find an Internship Workshop

Look no further- come attend the "How to Find an Internship" workshop on Thursday, Sept 5th from 12-1:00pm! This workshop will be held in the University Career Center (3100 Hornbake Library South Wing).

To help you with your internship search, the workshop will discuss:
  • Specific resources available to research internship opportunities in non-profit, government and corporate sectors
  • Quick tips on making a positive first impression on resumes and during interviews
  • Strategies to connect with UMD alumni working within your intended career field

Group Fitness Instructors + Managers Wanted

SplashCycle, a boutique aquacycling company, is looking for group fitness instructors and managers for their classes located in College Park, MD (The Hotel at The University of Maryland- 7777 Baltimore Ave).

Aquacycling is a unique workout where stationary bikes are placed in a swimming pool and you pedal against the water resistance. It is a low-impact but intense workout suitable for riders of all fitness levels.

Compensation: $35-$50 per class depending on prior experience plus success based profit sharing structure for managers.

Requirements: SplashCycle will provide free training but will require that you obtain a fitness certificate (if you don’t have any) and fitness instructor insurance. Prior group teaching experience is a plus.

Undergraduate Research Assistant Opportunity

Research Assistants Needed for Implementation Study of Early Care and Education Center
Serving Low-income Children!

Dr. Brenda Jones Harden, at the University of Maryland College Park (UMD), is seeking an undergraduate research assistant (URA) to work in the Prevention and Early Adversity Research Lab (PEARL) in UMD’s College of Education. The URA position is related to a contracted research project with an early care and education center in Northeast Washington, DC (about 15-20 minutes from UMD) serving young children ages 0-5. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  • develop relationships with parents and school personnel to build rapport and conduct good-quality research
  • conduct child assessments including measures of language, cognition, and school readiness, as well as parent interviews
  • enter data
  • review relevant literature
  • help with the organization of the project.
This center is metro-accessible; however, it is easier if the URA has their own transportation. Ideally, students should have availability some weekday mornings, from 8am-12pm. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. There are options to work in the lab for credit or volunteer.

Qualifications:
  • Major in psychology, education, child development, family science, or a related discipline
  • Some experience working with children and families
  • Background using SPSS or other data entry programs is a plus, but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills are required
  • Minimum 6 hours per week preferred

Assistant Coach Wanted

Gain experience volunteering in the community with the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Howard County program!

GOTR is looking for an Assistant Coach for an after-school run program for 7th-grade girls. Volunteers will help coach practices at Patuxent Valley Middle School, a short 20-25 minute drive from campus. Practices run on Mon/Wed from 2:25-3:45 starting September 22nd - December. The program ends with a culminating 5k. 

Open to males/females. No CPR/AED required, but recommended. No prior running/training experience needed.

Site Research Coordinator: Full-time Position

The Exercise for Brain Health (E4BH) Laboratory at the University of Maryland, directed by Dr. J. Carson Smith, is seeking a full-time Site Coordinator! The E4BH Lab is focused on understanding how exercise and physical activity affect human brain function and mental health.

The focus of this position will be to support a federally funded clinical trial examining the impact of supervised exercise classes on brain and cognitive function in older adults at increased risk for Alzheimer’s Disease. The exercise classes are run out of several facilities within driving distance of College Park, including retirement communities, fitness centers/private gyms, and community centers.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  • managing exercise class schedules to ensure all exercise classes have instructor coverage
  • site supply management
  • data quality control and management
  • participant recruitment
  • initial outreach and securing of new sites
  • training of new exercise instructors
  • other tasks that support the efforts of the clinical trial and laboratory
