Spring 2020 Sports Nutrition Volunteers Needed
The University of Maryland Sports Nutrition Department is seeking volunteers to assist the Sports Dietitians for the SPRING 2020 (and beyond if desired). The number of volunteers accepted is to be determined (likely between 7-10). Before I discuss the application requirements, please read the summary below of what types of projects, tasks and experiences you will have as a Sports Nutrition volunteer, and see if it is something you may be interested in.
The primary role of the sports nutrition volunteers will be to assist the Sports Nutritionist with the stocking, cleaning, and distributing NCAA-compliant food and/or supplements to student-athletes in the Xfinity, Gossett, and Varsity Team House Weight rooms.
Fueling Stations:
- Ensure sport supplements and snacks are fully stocked at all times
- Monitor inventory of sport supplements and snacks; check dates and apply the first-in-first-out method
- Stock, organize and inventory sport supplements and snacks.
- Fill and monitor smoothie machines; distribute protein smoothies to student-athletes as necessary
- Keep nutrition bar clean throughout your shift – wiping down counters, sweeping up crumbs, cleaning smoothie machine as necessary (weekly).
- Keeping nutrition
education materials available and up to date. - Create and participate in weekly food tastings and/or demos under the guidance of Sports RDs.
- There will also be opportunities to assist with fueling during spring football practices/post-practices/etc.
When the fueling station does not need staffing, other duties of the sports nutrition volunteers will include administrative tasks; nutrition assessment; development of educational materials; contributing to social media (Twitter); nutrition education presentations and student-athlete education; conducting literature reviews; and any other duties as assigned by the Sports Nutritionist. Volunteers must possess the ability to adhere to and comply with Department, University, Big 10 and NCAA rules and regulations.
Through these tasks and projects you will be supporting the development of the Sports Nutrition Department at the University of Maryland, while also gaining invaluable experience and exposure to the nutritional needs of Division I student-athletes and the day-to-day duties of a collegiate sports nutritionist.
If you are still interested in being a part of the growth of this program, please contact all Sports RDs in 1 email: (Colleen: cdavis86@umd.edu ,Paula: pkaramih@umd.edu , Kala: kriester@umd.edu , Megan: mmorley@umd.edu) ASAP.
